Multiple YouTube Rammer Jammers from Bama/UT '07

One of the rare occasions when the lyrics of the Rammer Jammer Cheer sound less like gloating, and more like simply an objective assessment of the game. WARNING: UT fans who click the links below may experience nausea, palpitations, vertigo and a powerful urge to fire your coach.

From the end zone. Liking it.
RJYH RATING: 9.5

From across the field. Sounds...BIG!
RJYH RATING: Definitely a 10.

From the band. Shaky video, but forgiveable since the shooter is also playing the trombone.
RJYH RATING: This one goes to 11....

Field level: This is what it probably sounded like to Phil Fulmer. Yikes!!
RJYH RATING: Too awesome to quantify!

Want more RJYH from the End Zone on the students' side? Okay -- here you go.
RJYH RATING: <strike>9.5</strike> What the hell -- let's just call it an even 10.

Across from the band again. Sweet.
RJYH RATING: I was going to give it a 9.5, but the guy just seems too psyched. 10!!!!

RJYH Blog Awakes...Kinda. And: an Announcement...

I've been on a blogging hiatus because I'm on a book deadline, and although I'm still in the weeds, I'll be posting from time to time now that the season is cranking up again.

In the meanwhile, a bit of an announcement: In late September ESPN Books will publish The ESPN Guide to Psycho Fan Behavior, which I had the good fortune to edit.

Here's the cover:

The book has useful tips on things like "How to tear down a goal post," "How to keep your infant from growing up into a fan of a rival team," and "How to listen to games during weddings and funerals (without getting ejected)." It's ridiculous, in the best of ways, and, if I say so myself, hilarious, owing to the brilliant writing of Spencer "Orson Swindle" Hall, Ethan "Straight Cash Homey" Trex and Amir "Also Straight Cash Homey" Blumenfeld. Those guys are some kind of funny. And as amply noted throughout the book, if you take any of its advice literally, you'll probably get carted off to a mental institution. So keep that in mind when buying a copy for your six year-old nephew, or irony-challenged mother-in-law.

You can pre-order on the book's Amazon page, which still has a long-rejected cover image in place, soon to be updated we hope.

And more soon coming at www.PsychoFan.com...so stay tuned. And check in here from time to time as well.

What could be more important thatn the hiring of Nick Saban??

As several diligent readers have pointed out, I've neglected to post anything on the hiring of Nick Saban -- or, as more than several readers have pointed out, occasionally caustically, on his being accosted by an obsessed, intoxicated football fan (along with many other obsessed, possibly not intoxicated fans), at the Tuscaloosa Airport. Definitely a dereliction of duty. My excuse is that I've been hard at work on a story about these guys....

Gators: Get Up and Go!

Alas...a hearteningly just outcome to the BCS mess!

My take: the Gators deserve it, hands down. They played the toughest schedule in the country -- including a wicked mid-season run against ranked opponents, nine to Michigan's six -- and Big Blue had their shot. My big problem with rematches is that they favor the team that lost the first time, and furthermore, they negate the meaning of the first game. I mean, by Michigan fan logic, even if they beat OSU in the last game of the season, shouldn't they just be TIED at the end of the season?? After all, losses don't matter that much do they?

My future advice to teams that want to gripe about not making the title game: first of all, win your conference. Conference runner ups don't deserve to play in the big one. And if you're the runner up of a weaker conference -- helloooOOOoooo Michigan -- well...forget it. I'm not a reflexive fan of the SEC in these situations, by the way. I just don't think this one was even close. And when the Gators beat OSU -- there I said it -- the whole discussion is going to seem pretty silly.

I had the good fortune to attend the SECCG on Saturday with a certain insane Gators fan and it was a blast watching him and his crew go berserk. This was our view.

Gator Central.

But my favorite moment of the evening came at half time when throngs of Gators fans packed the men's bathrooms because they were the only places in the building where the hoi polloi could watch USC - UCLA.

Some guy named Booty throws an interception.

The Hogs played pretty well, but their offense doesn't allow them to come from very far behind, and a certain boneheaded punt return attempt put them in the hole. There's something really ugly and unfootball-y about Meyer's version of the spread -- it looks a little too delicate and dainty for my tastes -- but that's an aesthetic criticism. It's hard to defend, as the Buckeyes will learn soon enough, and I can't wait to see the outcome.
