Claim: Fox Sports Car Giveaway Joke on Panthers Fan Was Cruel and "Lame"

Apparently during the Aug. 24 broadcast of the Panthers - Dolphins pre-season game, Fox Sports commentators told the audience they were about to give away a car on the air. This was good news to Greg Good, a.k.a. Catman, a 49 year-old college gradute with three children and a 1991 Chevrolet Astro van with 130,000 miles on it.

So imagine Catman's delight when Tony Siragusa, the Fox Sports sideline reporter, approached him and told him he'd won the car!

Catman.jpg

"Catman."

Siragusa then presented Catman with a toy car, not a real one. Turns out, it was all a big joke.

But here's where it gets really sad. According to the Charlotte Observer, Catman, "believing the toy was a symbol for the real thing, said on-camera to Siragusa: 'Thank you! Thank you very, very, very much -- it's a blessing and a prayer answered!'"

Now where did Catman get the idea that he was going to be given an actual car? Perhaps it was because the Fox commentators said variously "We're giving a car away tonight," and "So our lucky fan is going to drive off with a new car."

A Fox spokesman says it was a misunderstanding. But the Charlotte Observer thinks Catman deserves a new vehicle. What do you think?

Update: apparently our polling service is experiencing a temporary (we hope) meltdown. At last count, there were 909 votes (93%) in favor of Fox getting Catman a new car, and 66 votes (6.8%) against. We'll put the poll up for another few hours when it's alive again.

That story made me genuinely sad. I almost want to BUY the guy a car. Except only, I'm a reporter.

Carla Jean,

Maybe all the reporters who read this blog should pitch in 10% of their salaries. All told, we could probably by Catman a used bicycle at least.

Justice for Catman!

Put me in the "darn skippy" camp. "So our lucky fan is going to drive off with a new car" is technically true, I suppose... Catman did drive home, and he did have a new (toy) car. But it's so misleading as to be downright cruel. Fox may or may not have a legal obligation, but they certainly have a moral one. Not that Fox is known for upholding moral standards...

Posted by: johnw at September 6, 2006 05:43 PM

The guy, "Catman", did not win a car and he does not deserve a car.

They never said what the car is. They never described it as a Ferrari or a Kia.

Catman never gave up anything to earn the car - he didn't purchase anything and didn't rely on their promise.

Maybe he should save up the money he squanders on that ridiculous outfit and eight expensive NFL games.

Total BS

Fox should be responsible. What is a new car to Fox? about half a second of advertising budget. But I guess the negative PR is better.

I believe a radio station was sued (and lost) for a DJ saying he was giving away a brand new Toy Yoda and making it seem like he was giving away a car--talking about the fun you'll have with it, how you can spend hours with it, you'll love waxing it, etc.

I'd hate to wax a Toy Yoda.

Posted by: PMoney at September 6, 2006 08:31 PM

a.) Fox lies, big news.
b.) Tony Siragusa is should stick to doing twisted tea commercials.
c.) Catman should get his priorities in order.

Regardless, give the man a car, you cheap jerks.

Posted by: bk at September 6, 2006 08:55 PM

Follow-up from the Charlotte Disturber: Fox Sports' VP has apologized for their cruel/lame prank attempt, will be giving Catman a truck, and will be meting out internal discipline on those involved.

No word on if Fox is going to throw in a gift of Tim Ryan and Ron Pitts never calling a Panther game again, but I'm hoping Catman holds out for it...

Posted by: Me at September 6, 2006 09:55 PM

He deserves the car. There was a similar story a few years ago in which some bosses at an office told their employees that they were having a raffle, and the prize was a new toyota (yay!). Well, the woman that won was then presented with a 'toy yoda'...long story short she sued, won, and is now presumably driving around in a few-years-old-toyota. Sue 'em, Catman, that car is yours.

Posted by: Patrick at September 7, 2006 12:07 AM

What if Catman came on a bus? Wouldn't he be entitled to the actual driveable by a normal-sized human-being car?

Posted by: kenny at September 7, 2006 12:20 AM

Dude when did everyone become such a communist? He doesn't deserve the car just like I don't deserve the car!

Posted by: dude man at September 7, 2006 12:21 AM

Kinda reminds me of the Hooters waitress that won a toyota for the most sales in a week. Seems the manager actually gave her a "Toy Yoda" Star Wars Doll. She sued and Hooters had to give her the car

Posted by: win01 at September 7, 2006 12:26 AM

FOX Sucks, and should be boycotted.... at least they only broadcast NFC games!

Posted by: Screw Fox at September 7, 2006 01:20 AM

[Fox commentators said variously "We're giving a car away tonight," and "So our lucky fan is going to drive off with a new car."]
With emphasise on the part where he says "going to drive off", FOX was f*cked up in giving the guy a toy car. If it was an RC Car, fine, then he can drive it. But a toy car. LOL. I hope this guy takes them to court, cuz he'll win. Ya can't say someone's gonna win a car and drive off in it and then give them a toy car. That's false advertisement and you are liable.

Posted by: BornInTheGrove at September 7, 2006 01:32 AM

The precedent is there for him to sue and win a car. You'd think someone at FOX would've stepped in and done something, but come on, it's FOX for crying out loud.

De de de of the week.

Posted by: FOX = de de de at September 7, 2006 02:13 AM

BornInTheGrove,

Drive off "with" a new car. Thanks for writing a treatise based on your horrible reading comprehension.

Also, being guilty of false advertising, and civilly liable for a new car are two very different things.

Moron.

It's like that Hooters waitress that was awarded with a new "toyota" for being the best worker of the month. She was actually awarded a new "toy yoda" wherein she took the people to court saying she was deserving of an actual car and that the contest was misleading.

Posted by: notmebutme at September 7, 2006 09:45 AM

He deserves the car because they said the words "drive away in". Its irresponsible and a stupid joke, but catman should at least get a buick out of the deal.

Posted by: unfeelinglawyer = douche at September 7, 2006 11:33 AM

fox should play a joke on fat siragusa and tell that useless blobbetic retard that he can come back for another season.

Posted by: 1215 at September 7, 2006 01:15 PM

catman deserves to be publicly stoned. cry me a river about his van and his kids and his 'hard luck'... you wanna give him a new car, go buy it your self. i hope if it does go to court, catman pays out the nose for lawyer fees and ends up losing his wife, his kids, his job, and his digni...oh wait, he doesn't have any right now. this man is obviously an idiot, A) because he dresses like a cat, and B) because he didn't get the joke. get over it you bunch of bleeding liberal scum.
oh yeah...GO FALCONS!

Posted by: ann coulter IS hot at September 7, 2006 02:04 PM

I wish I could punch you in the face. You obviously don't understand moral responsibility or have any concern for a fellow man. Catman does not need the car but it would help him out alot and it's just plain cruel to let someone in his situation believe that he's won something as great as a new car and then take it away. A car is pennies to FOX and it would be in their best interest to just give him a new car to maintain their public perception.

I was all for this guy until I saw this. According to the FULL Charlotte Observer article...

"He (Good) bought Panthers permanent seat licenses on the first day they were available. He has his own bobblehead, which he financed himself. "It's a limited edition," he said, chuckling. "There are 1,000 of them, and I've still got 600 of them bobbling around the house."

Hmm....new car for me & my kids to replace my crappy '91 Chevy Astro with more miles on it than Paris Hilton, or seats to football games and a 1000 bobbleheads of myself.

I don't care how educated he is, Good is a dipshit who needs to learn about establishing and living within a budget.

The addage is we all get what we deserve. While it doesn't always hold true in every circumstance, this is one instance where it did.

Posted by: you know who I am at September 7, 2006 06:38 PM

Thanks for all your kind words and to heck with you haters. I should get something out of this deal as I deserve it. I dress up in a stupid costume every home game and we still lose. Geez, give me a break. And the chick that won the "Toy Yoda" well she is my wife. And all we got from Hooters on that deal was a 93 Tercel with 180k miles on it. Useless POS. I feel that the Panthers are part at fault here to and should give me part ownership in the team. You guys agree? If not, F you. BABA BOEY RULES!

Posted by: Catman at September 7, 2006 06:48 PM

Pimp his Astro. MTV doesnt give people NEW cars but they make them really gay looking. Maybe that would make Catman's day.

Posted by: practical at September 7, 2006 07:22 PM

First off...please stop repeating sh*t that's already been stated...you should retarded.

Second, if I'm not mistaken, for said 'drive off WITH a new car.' Unfortunately, a toy CAR is just that, whether or not the toy aspect of the car was stipulated is immaterial. He won his (toy) CAR and is entilted to simply that.

but f*uck it, Fox sucks, give him the car.

Posted by: Chris at September 7, 2006 10:09 PM

I met the guy, real panthers fan for sure. just buy the guy a car, its not like FOX doesnt have the cash.. I dont think ill watch these people after all of this BS.
