Stanford 'Tree' mascot canned for drunkenness
Cal-Berkeley security guards surround a drunken Erin Lashnits, the Stanford Tree, during halftime of this week's Cal - Stanford game. Erin blew a .157, and was dismissed from her position as Tree.
Being the Tree, Lashnits told the Stanford student paper, was the "closest I'll ever come to being a rock star."
Even so, she said it's time to step aside: "I'm so f*cking burnt out," Lashnits said. "I have shin splints that are killing me and my costume got torn up and destroyed against Washington when Sixth Man stormed the court. The only things I'm missing are two home basketball games which really aren't that big of a deal to me. I'm not that big of a sports fan."
[thanks Ryan]

Love to see any attention given to the criminal nature of the Stanford tree - criminally bad mascot, criminally drunk, whatever.
However, I can't let this pass: "Cal-Berkeley." Just as the University of Texas at Austin is known as just "Texas," and the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa is known as "Alabama," the University of California, Berkeley athletics teams are known simply as "California." "Cal" also works.
(I know it's nit-picking, but wouldn't it tweak your ears to hear someone say "Bama-Tuscaloosa plays Auburn this week..."?)
actually, I hear "the university of texas at austin" quite a bit....they have a bunch of directional schools in their branches (UT-San Antonio, UT-Arlingon, UT-Dallas, UT-El Paso, UT-Pan America, etc.)
It gives me the red-ass every time a person writes or says "Alabama-Birmingham" instead of UAB, but that doesn't stop it. Guess I'll just keep going "arg!" and making plans to send nasty letters to the AP.
If a tree projectile vomits in the forest and no one is there to smell it, does it still stink?
Rajiv is right - no one calls it 'Cal-Berkeley'.
The correct, most commonly used form is 'UC Berkeley', which is standard for the campuses of the UC system of which Berkeley is one of many. Others include UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Merced, etc.
This is hilarious!
Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer was a great read. My professor recommended it to me in American Sports History class. The part about the daughters wedding was platinum.
Gotta love drunk trees. I wish Big Al would get drunk and show up in Krispy-Kremeville with a shock collar and a dozen hot glazed. Put the collar on fat Phil put the donuts 30 yards away, and give a drunk Big Al the remote shocker. I'll bet it would be the number one rated show in Alabama no matter what it was up against.
dip shit. University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa is the main campus. UAB is University of Alabama, Birmingham, which is not the main campus. Same rule applies in your stupid ass state.
Actually Rajiv is wrong about Alabama though. The name of the university (not just the sports teams mind you) is the Universtiy of Alabama. Notice the lack of a city name at the end of it. Other Alabama schools like UAB and UAH have cities attached, but not the University of Alabama (UA).
To mrybill's point: thanks for backing me up. "UC Berkeley" is absolutely the preferred shorthand for the university in general. But again, the athletics programs are known more concisely as "California" or "Cal."
AgRyan04, you hear "the University of Texas at Austin" because that's the official name of the school (almost unique in having the "at" as part of their name instead of a comma). But wouldn't it be weird to see Vince (or from on, I suppose, Ramonce / Selvin / etc) referred to as a player for "UT-Austin"? Our use of "California" or "Cal" instead of "UC Berkeley" for athletics is directly analogous to their use of "Texas" or "UT" instead of the University of Texas at Austin.
I don't know if Neal was calling me or someone else a dipshit. If he was suggesting my analogy to Alabama was incorrect because Tuscaloosa is the main campus - well, that was my point, Neal. It's known as "California" because it's the flagship university of my "stupid ass state." UC Davis, UCLA, etc, followed (in that order, interestingly).
Yeah, but Alabama isn't known as "Alabama" and officially titled the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa.
It is simply called, The University of Alabama.
check the website
No city referenced in the name.
