Congress holds hearings on BCS; told playoff possible

Sure Congress has a few distractions to worry about -- war, terrorism, the economy, health care, yada, yada, yada -- but somehow they're still finding a way to deal with truly urgent matters, like the debate over the BCS.

Now just because Congress is going to spend precious time on such an important matter doesn't mean they're actually going to do anything about it -- from the outset, Congressmen said they had no intention of mandating a playoff system by law. (Darn.)

But nevertheless, the deep probing and powerful deductive thinking by these inquiring public servants yielded the occasional shocking revelation: "Doesn't it really boil down to that the major bowls ... don't want a playoff system because you think it's going to impinge on the money that the big bowls make?" asked Rep. Joe Barton.

Now who'd have thought...?!?!?

My hunch is that fans everywhere are rejoicing at the hard work and powerful intellectual energy Congress has devoted to this intransigent national crisis.

My first reaction to this nonsense was to be outraged at this waste of time, effort, and taxpayers' dollars when there are real problems for Congress to address . . . but then I calmed down enough to realize that, if Congress is holding meaningless hearings about a subject they have absolutely no intention of doing a thing in the world about, that's time they're not spending messing with the rest of us, and that's a good thing.

Ah, so they're taking a break from cutting my financial aid and giving tax breaks to the wealthy. Good to know.
